Drilled-in Anodes

Drilled-in anodes for impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP). A straightforward way to distribute current through the concrete is to drill holes in the openings of the reinforcement mesh and fit anodes into them. Pins of activated titanium or ceramic titanium oxide are placed in the concrete. The length and diameter of the pins are matched to the reinforcement geometry and the intended protection current density.
Their placement and number usually follow from that geometry, in relation to the chloride profile, for example. With this type of system the anodes can be placed exactly where corrosion hotspots have been found. Slots are usually cut between the anodes to conceal the connections, so the wiring is less visible and less vulnerable to damage. Drilled-in anodes are particularly suitable where depth of effect is needed, for instance at expansion joints in viaducts.
